”Dagen i dag är Sverige–Amerika-veckans förnämsta dag, då svenskarna och Amerika-svenskarna gemensamt fira den stora amerikanska frihetsdagen, 4 juli.

Klockan 11 i dag på förmiddagen samlades stadens främsta för att högtidligen mottaga Minnesotas officiella delegation. Närvarande voro borgmästarna, stadsfullmäktiges ordförande, representanter för magistraten, stadsfullmäktige, stadens verk och styrelser m.fl. Dessutom märktes Amerikas chargé d’affaires Hallet-Johnson, förre ministern Thomas, kommendör Reevs i spetsen för sina officerare, en hel del Amerika-svenskar, jämte många göteborgare utan officiell funktion. En hel del unga damer i smakfulla toaletter livade upp i församlingen.

Man samlades i Börsens salonger, varefter de närvarande i procession och under tonerna av en marsch tågade in i stora festsalen, vid vars långsida närmast torget en talarestol under en baldakin hade anordnats. Vid sidan av baldakinen stod Göteborgs vapen, vilket förlänade åt högtidligheten ett högeligen officiellt intryck. De till ett par hundra uppgående församlade togo plats på stolar, vilka uppställts i salens längdriktning. Framför talarestolen placerade sig delegationens medlemmar. Utanför fönstren vajade blågula dukar, och från torget hördes en musikkår spela nationella melodier.

Grosshandlare Carlander tog först till orda och hälsade delegationen välkommen. Då vi fingo meddelande om att Minnesota i samband med Sverige–Amerika-veckan skulle skicka hit en officiell delegation var det ju lämpligt att mottaga den just på denna dag, sade tal. Vår stads främste har nu samlats för att mottaga eder och på stadens vägnar hälsar jag eder välkomna och överlämnar ordet till delegationens ledare mr Edgar Mattson.

Mr Mattson framträdde nu och höll ett tal innan överlämnandet av den officiella adressen gjordes. Talaren tackade för välkomsthälsningen och förklarade det vara en ära att få fira frihetsdagen under dessa former. Den 4 juli föddes en ny nation, men många äldre nationer ha fått släppa till material till den. Talaren erinrade om, att Minnesota är den stat i Amerika, som har de flesta svenskarna, och även om de geografiskt befinna sig långt från moderlandet, så äro de i alla fall en del av detsamma. Vilket var naturligare, än att just Minnesota skulle låta sig representera vid ett tillfälle som detta och tacka för den insats, som svenskarna gjort i statens liv. I dag känna vi oss som svenskar i våra hjärtan. Talaren uppläste därefter Minnesotas adress, som var av följande lydelse:

Resolutions adopted by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota.

Whereas, there is to be held Gothenburg, Sweden, from May 8 to September 10 1923 a World’s Fair or Jubilee Exposition known as the Tercentennial exposition of Gothenburg, commemorating the three hundredth anniversary of the granting of a charter making Gothenburg a city, and whereas, the Government of Sweden has extended to the President and the Government of the United States and to its citizens, an invitation to attend said exhibition, and has set aside the first week in July for American exercises, with special festivities and celebrations on America’s Independence Day, July Fourth, and whereas, the State of Minnesota owes much of its intellectual progress and material prosperity to the sturdy, industrious, independent and intelligent pioneers from Sweden, who have settled within its borders and to their descendants, now therefore, be it resolved: by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Minnesota, that the Governor of Minnesota be requested to appoint a delegation of five or more representative citizens who shall bring to the Government and the People of Sweden the greetings of the People of Minnesota upon this occasion, and express to them our gratitude for the gift of the many of Sweden’s sons and daughters who have come to our State and who have contributed so much to its advancement in art and science, in religion, in statesmanship and in industry.

Be it further resolved: that we hereby express the hope that the cordinal relations between the Governments of Sweden and of the United States may always continue, and that the bonds  of friendship between the People of Sweden and of Minnesota may be more closely cemented in the interest of the common welfare, and, be it, further resolved: that the delegates from Minnesota be requested to present a copy of the resolutions to the officials of the Government of Sweden and to the officials of the Exposition at Gothenburg and convey to them the cordial felicitations and sincere greetings of the People of Minnesota.

Högtidligheter på Götaplatsen

Sedan processionen anlänt till Götaplatsen och ett musiknummer utförts, tog konsulinnan Sholes, Göteborg, till orda och yttrade följande:

A distinguished American has been asked by the American Gustavus III Memorial Association to present this monument to the City of Göteborg today, and perhaps it is not inappropriate to here mention the resolutions adopted by the association at Göteborg on March 15th last regarding our choise and at that meeting our association adopted the following resolutions:

  1. That som recognition be tendered the memory of Gustavus III during the Göteborg Tercentenary Jubilee Exposition, and that monument should be erected at Göteborg by Americans in recognition of the great services rendered by that Swedish monarch to the American people.
  2. That Dominio I. Murphy, American Counsul General, Stockholm be requested to make the principal address upon the occasion of the presentation of the monument to the City of Göteborg on July 4th in recognition of his timely action in inviting attention, at the meeting of the American Week Committee of the Göteborg Jubilee Exposition, held on February 16th, 1923, to the service of that excellent king to America.

Mr Carlander, President of the City Council, Mr Broström, President of the Swedish-American Week Committee, ladies and gentlemen, I have much pleasure in presenting to you the Honorable Dominio I. Murphy, the American Consul General at Stockholm, who will now address you.

Därefter överlämnades ordet till amerikanske generalkonsuln I Stocholm, mr Murphy, som I ett längre tal erinrade om Gustaf III:s goda förhållande till Amerika och de känslor av vänskap och aktning, som städes varit rådande mellan Sverige och Amerika.
